SAAMI - American National StandardSHELTON, Conn. — The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute®, Inc., (SAAMI®), is pleased to announce the release of the 2023 update to American National Standard SAAMI Z299.5-2023, Voluntary Industry Performance Standards Criteria for Evaluation of New Firearms Designs Under Conditions of Abusive Mishandling for the Use of Commercial Manufacturers.

SAAMI is an accredited standards developer recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

The 2023 American National Standard SAAMI Z299.5-2023 update details test procedures that will aid the designer and manufacturer in evaluating the performance of new designs of firearms under certain conditions of abusive mishandling.

The publication of these standards is a primary part of SAAMI’s mission to establish and maintain standards to ensure safety, reliability and interchangeability of firearms, ammunition, and components.

SAAMI American National Standards are periodically updated to ensure they remain current with developments in the industry and to capture new cartridge designs introduced by its member companies.

Following development by SAAMI member companies, the standard is reviewed by independent manufacturers, government agencies, testing laboratories, users, and outside experts.

OVERVIEW: 2024 will be the fifth biennial SAAMI Ballistics Conference. The purpose of the Conference is to serve as a training workshop and discussion forum addressing a broad range of topics relevant to small arms ammunition ballistic laboratory/test facility operations, methods, and equipment.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND? The SAAMI Ballistics Conference will be of special interest to small arms ballistic laboratory technicians, ammunition and firearm test engineers, and test facility managers, civilian, law enforcement, and military who utilize the SAAMI standards in the manufacture or qualification of ammunition and firearms.

Salt Lake CityABOUT THE WORKSHOP: The SAAMI Ballistics Conference will be held Tuesday, September 10 and Wednesday, September 11 in Salt Lake City, UT at the Sheraton Salt Lake City Hotel. There will be an optional site visit on Thursday, September 12 to a local range to demonstrate long-range radar tracking equipment or to a local manufacturer (to be finalized).

In an effort to keep the content of this event pertinent to the industry and testing community, SAAMI is looking to include new topics for the 2024 event. Topics planned for the 2024 conference include:

  • PCB Ballistic Pressure Sensor User’s Training and Practical Workshop.
  • Short and long-range radar system applications for projectile trajectory analysis.
  • Long range ballistics measurement considerations.
  • Legal considerations of test recordkeeping to mitigate product liability risk.
  • In-process and final product measurements and data acquisition systems.

SAAMI is the organization at the forefront of promoting firearm safety by creating standards that ensure safety, reliability, and interchangeability of firearms, ammunition, and components.

28-Gauge 3” – The 28-Gauge 3” was introduced by Olin Winchester with three loadings: 1⅛ oz. lead shot traveling at a velocity of 1,200 fps, ¾ oz. non-lead shot traveling at a velocity of 1,350 fps, and 1 oz. non-lead shot traveling at a velocity of 1,300 fps, all at a Maximum Average Pressure of 14,000 psi.

21 Sharp – The 21 Sharp rimfire cartridge was introduced by Olin Winchester with a 25-grain bullet traveling at a velocity of 1,725 fps and a Maximum Average Pressure of 24,000 psi.

SAAMI Posts New Publication on Range Cleaning

SHELTON, Conn — The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute® has released its latest publication—“Considerations in Range Cleaning”—and posted the document to the SAAMI® library of informational publications and advisories on its website (saami.org).

“This document reviews areas that must be taken into consideration when conducting range cleaning to ensure the safety of range personnel, employees, and those handling the waste stream for collection, transport, and disposal,” said Alan Serven, SAAMI’s Sr. Director, Technical Affairs.

SAAMI is the organization at the forefront of promoting firearm safety by creating standards that ensure safety, reliability, and interchangeability of firearms, ammunition, and components.

The new title is one of many valuable guides in the SAAMI resource center, which includes informational brochures, guidance documents, and advisories on topics related to the storage, use, and transportation of firearms, ammunition, and propellants.

SAAMI - USA Shooting - Project ChildSafeWASHINGTON, D.C. — At its annual meeting last week in Branson, Mo., the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute®, Inc., (SAAMI®) auctioned many generously donated products from industry to raise $20,000 in support of USA Shooting and $4,000 in support of Project ChildSafe®, the firearm safety program of NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association.

SAAMI is the organization at the forefront of promoting firearm safety by creating standards that ensure safety, reliability and interchangeability of firearms, ammunition, and components.

“While conducting the important business of SAAMI at our annual meeting, it was both fun and an honor for attendees to raise funds to support two programs that mean so much to our industry — USA Shooting and the Project ChildSafe Foundation that supports NSSF’s gun safety program of the same name,” said SAAMI President and CEO Joe Bartozzi, who also is NSSF’s President and CEO and Chairman of the Project ChildSafe Foundation.

USA Shooting is the National Governing Body for the international shooting sports in the United States. It supports the training and competition of world-class athletes that participate in the Olympic Games, World Cups, National Championships and National Junior OIympic Championships, among other competitions.

Project ChildSafe is the nation’s largest, most comprehensive firearm safety program, helping to promote secure storage of firearms when they’re not in use through the distribution of free gun locks and educational materials. Since 1999, Project ChildSafe has partnered with more than 15,000 law enforcement departments to distribute more than 40 million firearm safety kits that include a gun lock and safety booklet.

The 2022 American National Standard SAAMI Z299.3-2022 update details ammunition performance guidelines, test equipment and procedures, and provides the dimensional guidelines for ammunition cartridges and firearm chambers.

The publication of these standards is a primary part of SAAMI’s mission to establish and maintain standards to ensure safety, reliability and interchangeability of firearms, ammunition and components.

SAAMI is the organization at the forefront of promoting firearm safety by creating standards that ensure safety, reliability and interchangeability of firearms, ammunition, and components.

7mm Precision Rifle Cartridge – The 7mm PRC was introduced by Hornady Manufacturing Co. with a 180-grain bullet traveling at a velocity of 2,950 fps and a Maximum Average Pressure of 65,000 psi.

360 Buckhammer – The 360 Buckhammer was introduced by Federal Cartridge Company with a 200-grain bullet traveling at velocity of 2,170 fps and a Maximum Average Pressure of 50,000 psi.

400 Legend – The 400 Legend was introduced by Olin Winchester with a 215-grain bullet traveling at velocity of 2,230 fps and a Maximum Average Pressure of 45,000 psi.
